xTool to Unveil X1 Laser and First Embroidery Machine on August 27

xTool will unveil its new X1 laser system on August 27 alongside what the company describes as its first embroidery machine. According to an initial teaser, the X1 is designed to combine a large working area with the processing speeds normally associated with galvo lasers.

The 53-second teaser, published on August 24, opens with a montage of previous xTool machines before presenting the question: "Speed or work area?"

In the accompanying description, xTool divides its laser portfolio into two categories. Gantry-based systems, ranging from the D1 series to the P3, prioritize working area. Galvo-based machines, including the F1 series and F2 Ultra UV, focus on speed.

"Gantry scale or galvo speed. Why choose?" the company states. "It's time to break the old rules."

Gantry Size Meets Galvo Speed

Galvo lasers use two rapidly moving mirrors to direct the beam while the laser head remains stationary. Their low moving mass enables marking speeds of several thousand millimeters per second, but the usable working area is limited by the optical system and focal lens.

Gantry machines instead move the laser head along rails above the workpiece. This allows them to cover substantially larger beds, although the added moving mass generally limits acceleration and processing speed.

The difference is evident in xTool's current product range. The galvo-based F2 Ultra offers a stated maximum speed of 15,000 mm/s across a 220 × 220 mm working area. The gantry-based P3 provides a much larger 915 × 458 mm workspace but has a quoted maximum speed of 1,200 mm/s.

For larger jobs on its galvo machines, xTool currently offers conveyor accessories that move the material beneath the stationary marking head. The X1 teaser suggests the company may be developing a more integrated approach.

A Hybrid Motion System?

During the final seconds of the teaser, xTool briefly shows the X1 with its outer enclosure removed. The render appears to feature a crossbeam moving along rails positioned on both sides of the machine, with a separate head traveling across the beam.

A second shot shows the head remaining stationary while the laser covers a wider section of a zebra graphic beneath it. Together, the sequences appear to suggest a gantry-mounted head capable of steering the beam within a local processing area.

Such a configuration could divide a large job into smaller sections, combining the coverage of a gantry system with the speed of galvo-based beam control. Precise alignment between these sections would be essential to prevent visible seams.

However, xTool has not yet confirmed the X1's optical arrangement, motion system, working area, laser source, or maximum processing speed. Full specifications are expected during the August 27 presentation.

xTool initially announced the X1 on August 13, the same day Bambu Lab teased an upcoming laser system scheduled for September. The two announcements suggest that competition in the desktop laser market could intensify over the coming months.
