How to Use This Resin 3D Printing Cost Calculator

  1. 01

Enter the resin volume from your slicer

Slice the model with its supports, then copy the resin volume in mL from Chitubox, Lychee, PrusaSlicer or your printer's own slicer into the Volume field.

  2. 02

Set your resin price per liter

Replace the Standard resin default in Cost / L with what your bottle cost per liter. For resin sold by the kilogram, multiply the per-kg price by 1.1, since standard resin weighs about 1.1 g per mL.

  3. 03

Add print time and hands-on time

Copy the print time from your slicer, then enter the minutes you spend washing, curing and removing supports as Labor Time.

  4. 04

    Check the resin consumables

FEP film / print, IPA wash / print, LCD wear / hr and Cleanup / PPE / print start at typical values. Replace them with your own, for example an FEP sheet's price divided by the number of prints it lasts.

  5. 05

Tune the machine and pick a margin

In Advanced Settings, set your printer's price, power draw and efficiency factor (1.2 by default). Add hardware, packaging and VAT or sales tax, then choose a pricing tier to see the selling price.

How the resin printing cost is calculated

Resin runs through the same cost engine as filament, with material priced by volume and resin consumables added to every print. The 1.2 efficiency factor adds 20% for failed prints, wash-off and vat residue.

Resin
volume (mL) ÷ 1000 × price per liter × 1.2 efficiency factor
Resin consumables
FEP film + IPA wash + cleanup/PPE per print, plus LCD wear per hour × print hours
Machine cost
print hours × (depreciation + maintenance + electricity per hour) × 1.3 buffer factor
Depreciation per hour
(printer cost + additional upfront cost) ÷ (life in years × 8,760 h × uptime %)
Maintenance per hour
annual maintenance ÷ (8,760 h × uptime %)
Electricity per hour
power (W) ÷ 1000 × price per kWh
Labor
labor time (min) ÷ 60 × hourly labor rate

Worked example

A 30 mL print in Standard resin at €35 per liter that takes 4 hours, plus 15 minutes of washing, curing and support removal. Everything else stays at the euro resin defaults.

Resin: 30 mL × €0.035/mL × 1.2€1.26
Consumables: FEP, IPA, cleanup and 4 h of LCD wear€0.52
Machine cost: 4 h, electricity included€0.27
Labor: 15 min at €20/h€5.00
Hardware and packaging€0.00
Total landed cost€7.05

At the default Standard tier (40% margin), this print sells for €11.75, or €14.10 with 20% VAT. Resin and consumables come to €1.78 together; without the hands-on time, the print costs €2.05.

Resin Printing Cost FAQ

Resin cost per mL, consumables, waste, and pricing, explained.

Ask us a question

How much does resin cost per mL?

Divide the bottle price by its volume in mL. At the calculator's euro default of €35 per liter, standard resin costs €0.035 per mL. The 1.2 efficiency factor (20% for waste) raises that to €0.042 per mL in the material line. Tough, flexible and castable resins usually cost more, so enter your own bottle price.

How do I find how much resin a print uses?

Your slicer reports it after slicing. Chitubox, Lychee and PrusaSlicer all show the resin volume in mL, supports included, so add supports and any hollowing before you slice. Copy that volume into the Volume field; the calculator prices resin by the liter, not by weight.

What costs does resin printing have besides the resin?

Every print wears the FEP film and the masking LCD, uses IPA for washing, and goes through gloves and paper towels. The calculator adds these as resin consumables: with the euro defaults, €0.40 per print plus €0.03 of LCD wear per print hour. On top of that come machine depreciation, maintenance, electricity and your labor.

How much waste should I add for failed prints and vat residue?

The resin calculator uses a material efficiency factor of 1.2, which adds 20% to the volume your slicer reports. That covers failed prints, resin washed off parts and supports, and what stays in the vat. If you rarely have failures and filter leftover resin back into the bottle, lower it in Advanced Settings; for a new printer or difficult models, raise it.

Is resin printing more expensive than FDM?

Material usually costs more: the default standard resin is €35 per liter, about €32 per kg, against €19.99 per kg for PLA. Resin also adds consumables like FEP film and IPA. Machine time is cheaper, though, since the default resin printer costs less and draws 60 W instead of 150 W. On small, detailed parts, labor tends to outweigh all of it. Open the FDM 3D printing cost calculator

How much electricity does a resin printer use?

Less than an FDM printer, since there is no heated bed or hotend to keep hot. The calculator assumes a 60 W average, or 0.06 kWh per print hour, which is about €0.01 an hour at €0.20 per kWh. A built-in resin heater raises the average, so measure a full print with a plug-in power meter and enter it in Advanced Settings.

How do I price resin prints and miniatures to sell?

Start from the total landed cost, which includes resin, consumables, machine time, labor and packaging, then add a margin. Pick one of the four pricing tiers or set your own margin. For miniatures, washing, curing and support removal are often the largest cost, so time them honestly. If you print a full plate at once, enter the plate's volume and time and divide the cost by the number of parts, or use batch pricing in PRO.

Does it work for SLA, MSLA and DLP printers?

Yes. Resin cost, waste, power, machine wear and labor work the same way for all three. The LCD wear field is for MSLA printers, which use a masking LCD; on a laser SLA or DLP machine, set it to zero or use it for the part that wears with print hours on your printer. The FEP film field takes whatever film or tank your vat uses, priced per print.
