InfiMaker has launched the K1, an enclosed desktop-class CNC mill designed for simultaneous five-axis machining. The machine is now available through Kickstarter, where pledges start at $5,199 and delivery is estimated for December 2026.

The campaign opened on August 11 and has raised more than $4.2 million from over 700 backers. It is scheduled to close on September 26.

Unlike a three-axis mill, which moves a cutter along the X, Y and Z axes, the K1 can also tilt and rotate the workpiece while machining. Coordinating all five axes allows the cutter to follow curved surfaces and reach several sides of a part without stopping to reposition it manually.

Five-Axis Machining in an Enclosed System

The K1 measures 560 x 700 x 800 mm and weighs approximately 110 kg. That keeps its footprint within desktop territory, although its weight calls for a sturdy workbench rather than an ordinary desk. The enclosure contains machining chips and helps reduce noise, which InfiMaker rates at under 70 dB under its stated test conditions.

The motion system is built around a one-piece cast bed and an inverted gantry, an arrangement InfiMaker says is intended to improve rigidity while keeping the machine compact.

Linear travel is 220 x 160 x 180 mm. The maximum workpiece for simultaneous five-axis machining is smaller at 120 x 120 x 120 mm, while three-axis jobs can use parts up to 220 x 150 x 150 mm. The B axis tilts from -30 to 110 degrees and the C axis rotates through 360 degrees.

Machining is handled by a 1.5 kW spindle with a maximum speed of 20,000 rpm. InfiMaker specifies rapid movement of up to 4,500 mm/min, a maximum cutting feed of 2,500 mm/min and repeatability of 0.01 mm on the linear axes.

The company lists aluminum, brass, copper, wood, acrylic, wax, jade, resin and engineering plastics among the supported materials. Steel and titanium are also listed, although InfiMaker describes those as light-duty applications in its launch announcement.

Automatic Tool Changing and Probing

A six-position automatic tool changer allows the K1 to move between operations such as roughing, finishing, drilling and engraving during the same job. One position can hold the included wireless probe, leaving five positions for cutting tools when the probe is installed.

The probe is used to locate the workpiece and establish its zero point before machining. InfiMaker says it can also detect rotational offset, reducing the manual setup needed when a part is not aligned perfectly with the machine.

An optional InfiFlow system circulates distilled water around the cutting area. InfiMaker presents it as an alternative to a conventional cutting-fluid system and includes it with one of the campaign bundles.

InfiStudio Aims to Simplify CAM

The K1 works with InfiStudio, InfiMaker's CAM software for Windows and macOS, with mobile access available for monitoring and machine control. Projects can also be managed from the machine's built-in touchscreen.

For conventional workflows, InfiStudio imports STL, STEP and OBJ models, while the machine can also run standard G-code produced by external CAM software. InfiMaker is developing an assisted workflow that can generate a starting 3D model from a text prompt or reference image before producing the toolpaths. An onboard camera can scan InfiMaker's QR-coded materials and load the corresponding cutting parameters automatically.

These features are designed to reduce the amount of CAM setup required before a job reaches the machine. In a sponsored preproduction demonstration, the Make Something channel used a K1 to cut versions of the same part in oak, brass and stainless steel. The presenter described the machine as a prototype and the software as a beta release.
