LightMake has put its first printer up for reservation: the L4, a four-toolhead machine on linear-motor XY drive, at a VIP price of $1,099 (about 970 EUR) against a $2,399 MSRP. The pitch is unusual enough to explain up front: the L4 doesn't change tools the way a Prusa XL or Snapmaker U1 does. All four heads stay loaded and parked at the edges of the frame, and the print passes between them in what LightMake counts as one second. What changed
July 28, 2026. This page launched alongside LightMake's official launch video, which also carried the first public statement of the campaign window: Q3 2026. The deposit ladder ($50 toward a $1,099 VIP price), the full spec table, and the L1 sibling model were already on the store. The page updates as the campaign date, add-on prices, and first independent tests land.
Four heads that never dock
The L4's core idea: a toolchanger without the toolchange. Four independent heads live on two crossbeams above the bed, each with its own linear-motor carriage, each keeping its own filament loaded and its nozzle pre-heated. On a multi-color model the heads take turns, and the handover is the whole trick: one head stops printing, the next takes over, and LightMake puts the mechanical switch between them at 1 second. The company's comparison point is the roughly 5 seconds a swap takes on today's fastest toolchangers, and the tens of seconds a single-nozzle machine with an AMS-style changer spends unloading, purging, and reloading per color.
The dedicated-nozzle architecture also changes the waste picture. With one nozzle per color there's no old color to purge out at every change, so the heaps of purge poop an AMS-style system produces don't exist here; what remains is a small prime tower to stabilize each nozzle before it prints. Alignment between the four nozzles is handled optically: the machine scans the actual deposited material and corrects head offsets to within 30 μm on LightMake's spec, and each head can lift 5 mm independently to stay clear of the print.
Linear motors instead of belts
From the A1 to the XL, desktop printers move their heads with belts. The L4 replaces them with magnetic linear motors, 8 sets in total across the XY drive, a technology that until now lived in industrial machines and one niche desktop printer. No belts means no stretch, no tensioning, and no friction in the drive itself, which is where LightMake's headline motion numbers come from: 500 mm/s printing, 1,000 mm/s travel, and closed-loop control that reads the head's true position instead of counting motor steps.

The company is unusually forthcoming with its bench data for a pre-launch startup. Its engineering blog documents the motor design down to the encoder resolution, and describes an aging rig that has run around the clock since October 9, 2025, logging 6,912 hours of motion by late July. That's the basis behind the rated 50,000-hour motor lifespan, which LightMake translates as about ten years at 14 hours of printing a day. The blog also names the trade-off it tuned for: the motors could go faster, but print speed is capped at 500 mm/s for quality.
Build volume: 354 x 370 x 386 mm, and how batch mode splits it
The full bed is available to a single head: 354 x 370 x 386 mm, on a 395 mm PEI plate. Multi-color jobs give up 20 mm of depth to head clearance, printing 354 x 350 x 386 mm, and the whole machine takes 610 x 620 mm of bench.

The four heads can also work at the same time. In batch mode the bed splits into zones and the heads print identical or mirrored copies in parallel: two large parts in dual-zone mode, or four in quad-zone mode, where each copy gets a 178 x 195 mm zone of the bed. That's the mode behind the "4X output" banner, and it's aimed squarely at print farms: same part, four at once, one job. A pair of shoes, or two pairs, in a single print is LightMake's own favorite example.
Specs, materials, and the software stack
The frame is a monolithic die-cast affair, the electronics run dual HD cameras with AI failure detection, and filament data syncs over RFID. Beside the L4, LightMake lists the L1: the same drive system and frame with a single head and a slightly larger bed, at a $899 VIP price (MSRP $1,599).

Both models print PLA, ABS, PETG, TPU, ASA, PVA, PET and the CF variants, with PA and PC listed as printable at the 320 C limit. MSRPs: $2,399 (L4) and $1,599 (L1). All prices USD; at the ECB rate the VIP prices are about 970 and 790 EUR, before VAT and import costs.
The slicer is a customized OrcaSlicer build, already downloadable in beta for Windows and macOS, and LightMake's own stability-testing posts show the motors driven from Klipper with a Fluidd interface. On top of that sits an ambitious software story: cluster management that dispatches jobs to a fleet, an AutoQueue scheduler that picks machines against a delivery deadline, a conversational AI that turns a typed request into slicing parameters, and WhatsApp control of the printer through an OpenClaw integration. An AMS-style material station is in development that would take the L4 to 16 colors, four per head, and an optional heated enclosure targeting 65 C is planned as well.
What four heads cost you
The trade-offs are baked into the geometry, and LightMake's own spec table is candid about them. Multi-color work loses 20 mm of bed depth to head clearance, and the parked heads claim the edges of an already large frame. Batch mode multiplies output only for identical or mirrored parts, each confined to its zone; four different models still print one at a time. The machine is open-frame until the enclosure add-on arrives, which matters for ABS and ASA on a 110 C bed, and the 16-color AMS route exists so far as a published plan. The performance figures also all come from LightMake's own lab for now, with independent reviews due once the campaign starts.
Who is LightMake
A young company moving fast. LightMake was founded in 2025 in Shenzhen, and its store introduces founder and CEO Vic Wang with senior roles at unnamed global firms; Chinese business press identifies the founder as Wang Zhiyu, who ran Anker's 3D-printer business before starting LightMake, with earlier stints at Huawei, SANY and Creality. The company raised an angel round in December 2025, led by Haixin Capital with Shenzhen's state-backed Nanshan fund following, and employs a team of about 40. The L4 is its first product and this its first campaign, which is the likely reason the engineering blog reads the way it does: a company building the trust it can't yet point to in the field.
How the $50 deposit works
- Pay $50 (about 44 EUR) on LightMake's store before the campaign opens. It locks the VIP price: $1,099 for the L4 or $899 for the L1, and one deposit covers one printer.
- When the Kickstarter opens in Q3, back it with the same email you used for the deposit. Orders placed in the first 48 hours also get a 4 kg multi-color PLA bundle LightMake values at $79.
- After the campaign ends, the deposit and the difference down to the VIP price come back as a refund, within 14 days by LightMake's FAQ, with up to 30 more for the payment to arrive.
The deposit is fully refundable until the campaign goes live, with refunds processed within 7 working days; once the campaign is live, it isn't. That's a narrower window than some rivals offer, worth knowing before you pay: Sovol and InfiMech both refund their deposits even after their campaigns end. Shipping is projected to start in November 2026, with fees and duties still being worked out per the FAQ.
L4 vs the field
The L4 arrives in the middle of the busiest year multi-tool printing has ever had, and its price lands between the budget challengers and the incumbents. Prices below from the makers' own stores on July 28:

Where that leaves the L4:
- Nothing shipping combines its two ideas. Four-plus-head toolchangers exist today, the U1 and the XL chief among them, and Peopoly's Magneto X put linear motors in a desktop printer back in 2024. No machine on the market does both at once, and none keeps all four heads hot and loaded with no swap at all. That combination, not any single ingredient, is what "world's first" on LightMake's banner refers to, and what a $1,099 VIP price is asking you to bet on.
- The U1 is the price anchor. At $899, Snapmaker's four-toolhead machine ships today from a company with delivered campaigns behind it. The L4 asks $200 more for faster handovers, linear motors, a much larger volume, and parallel batch printing.
- The budget flank is even more crowded. Sovol's M1D opened its campaign July 28 at $1,199 with seven heads, and InfiMech's MX Series brings toolchanging from $249 in the same quarter. Three multi-tool campaigns are now courting the same backers within weeks of each other.
- Against the AMS route, the case is time and waste. An H2D or K2 Plus Combo at a similar price prints more colors through one nozzle, at the cost of a purge per change and minutes per swap. The L4's four dedicated nozzles cap it at four colors out of the box but change in seconds with only a prime tower's worth of waste.
Should you put down the $50?
If the L4's combination is what you've been waiting for, the deposit is a cheap option on a $1,300 discount: refundable until the campaign goes live, then locked into whether you back it. The calculus is the usual crowdfunding one, so pledge what you'd be comfortable seeing arrive late.
