As of June 2026, PLA filament costs 2.0 cents per gram ($19.99/kg median) and PETG costs 1.9 cents per gram ($18.99/kg), based on prices we pulled from ten manufacturers' own stores on June 11. Price per gram is just spool price divided by net grams, but both numbers on that division hide traps: sale prices that never end, spools that are not a kilogram, and the waste your slicer never mentions. This page is the dated version of the answer, refreshed monthly.
What changed this month
June 2026 (first edition). Baseline established: 10 brands, 25+ SKUs, checked June 11 against official stores in USD and EUR. The headline surprise for anyone who last bought filament in 2024: PETG now prices at or below PLA across most brands. Updates land here every month with the date stamped above.
PLA: 2.0 cents per gram (June 2026)
Prices below are the manufacturers' own stores, cheapest standard color, 1 kg net spools unless noted, normalized to a true kilogram where the spool is not one. Street price is what was in the cart on June 11; several brands run discounts so permanent that the list price is mostly decoration.
| Brand | Per kg (street) | Per gram |
|---|---|---|
| SUNLU PLA+ 2.0 | $13.59 | 1.4¢ |
| Overture PLA (black) | $13.99 | 1.4¢ |
| Elegoo PLA Basic | $14.49 | 1.4¢ |
| Polymaker PolyLite / Panchroma | $19.99 | 2.0¢ |
| Creality Hyper PLA | $19.99 | 2.0¢ |
| Bambu Lab PLA Basic | $22.99 | 2.3¢ |
| Hatchbox PLA | $28.00 | 2.8¢ |
| Prusament PLA (970 g spool) | $30.92 | 3.1¢ |
Cheapest standard color per brand; Overture colors other than black/white run $19.99. Prusament normalized from $29.99 per 970 g net. SUNLU price is per roll in their 6-roll bundle listing. eSUN could not be verified this month (store blocks automated checks).
The median is $19.99/kg, and the shape of the market matters more than the median: there is now a stable budget tier at $14, a mid tier at $20, and a premium tier at $28-31 that you pay for tighter tolerances and per-spool QC data, not for the plastic. Specialty finishes stopped being upcharges in most lineups: Polymaker's silk, matte and high-speed PLA all cost the same $19.99 as basic. Carbon-fiber PLA is the exception, at roughly a $10 premium.
PETG: 1.9 cents per gram, now cheaper than PLA
I assumed PETG still carried its old premium over PLA. It did two years ago. The June 2026 numbers say otherwise:
| Brand | Per kg (street) | Per gram |
|---|---|---|
| Overture PETG (2-pack) | $13.49 | 1.3¢ |
| Elegoo PETG-CF | $18.99 | 1.9¢ |
| Creality Hyper PETG | $18.99 | 1.9¢ |
| SUNLU PETG-CF | $19.99 | 2.0¢ |
| Polymaker PETG | $19.99 | 2.0¢ |
| Bambu Lab PETG HF (EU) | 25.99 EUR | 2.6¢ (EUR) |
Elegoo and SUNLU now sell single PETG spools mainly as carbon-fiber variants; their plain PETG ships in multi-kg spools. Overture's plain PETG sells as a 2 kg twin pack at $26.99.
Median $18.99/kg, 1.9 cents per gram. If you have been printing PLA for cost reasons, that reason is gone; pick the material for the part, not the wallet.
EU prices: about 2.5 euro cents per gram, VAT included
Only a quarter of this site's readers shop in dollars, and EU shelf prices are not the US prices with a currency symbol swapped. They include 19-23% VAT, and they vary by storefront more than you would expect. I buy filament in Poland, and the same Prusament spool that the official store sells for 29.99 EUR costs about 35 EUR on the Polish storefront. Borders are a line item.
| Brand | Per kg | Per gram |
|---|---|---|
| 3DJake ecoPLA (house brand) | 20.46 EUR | 2.0¢ |
| Fiberlogy Easy PLA (850 g spool) | 23.01 EUR | 2.3¢ |
| Bambu Lab PLA Basic | 25.99 EUR | 2.6¢ |
| Prusament PLA (970 g spool) | 30.92 EUR | 3.1¢ |
| Prusament PLA, Polish store | 35.02 EUR | 3.5¢ |
Local-currency storefront prices converted to EUR at June 11, 2026 rates. Median across our EU data points: about 24.50 EUR/kg, or 2.5 euro cents per gram.
A spool is not always a kilogram
The per-gram math only works if you divide by the grams you actually get, and the label works against you twice. Gross weight: a Polymaker box weighs about 1,350 g, of which 350 g is the spool itself. Net weight: Prusament winds 970 g of filament, Fiberlogy's standard spool is 850 g, and Polymaker's PolyMax PETG is 750 g. None of this is hidden, but none of it is on the price tag either. A kilogram of filament is sometimes 970 grams, and the label will not apologize. Divide price by net grams before comparing anything; the Prusament row in our tables already had 3% added by that one correction.
The real cost per gram: budget 2.5 cents
The sticker says 2.0 cents per gram. Your prints pay more, for reasons the cost formula article covers in full:
- Waste: purge lines, skirts, supports and brims add about 10% on single-color work. Sticker 2.0¢ becomes 2.2¢.
- Failures: at a modest 1-in-10 failure rate, divide by 0.9. Now 2.4¢.
- Multicolor: an AMS-style purge tower can waste more than the model weighs. There is no flat rule; read your slicer's waste estimate.
The planning number this site uses: 2.5 cents per gram of PLA, all-in. A 100 g print is 2 dollars of plastic before electricity, machine time and your own labor enter the math.
How to pay less per gram
Refills are a quiet 11%. Verified across four brands: Bambu refill $19.99 vs $22.99 with spool, Prusament $26.99 vs $29.99, Elegoo $13.19 vs $14.49, Polymaker $17.99 with an extra 100 g. If your printer ecosystem takes refills, this is free money every spool.
Black and white are loss leaders. Overture's black PLA is $13.99 while its colors run $19.99. If the part gets painted or hidden, print it in the cheap color.
Bulk promos are real but temporary. Bambu's EU store was running 35% off 4 rolls up to 50% off 10 rolls in June 2026, which takes PLA Basic under 13 EUR a roll. Worth taking when it appears; not a baseline to plan on.
Ignore the list price. SUNLU's $18.99 list with a permanent $13.59 sale and Creality's $32.99 list against a standing $19.99 are pricing theater. The street price is the price.
Is filament getting cheaper? Slowly, yes
The one clean long-term anchor we could verify: Prusament PLA launched in September 2018 at $24.99 and sells in June 2026 at $29.99. That is +20% nominal across eight years, well under general inflation over the same period, so in real terms even the premium tier got cheaper. The budget tier moved further: $14/kg spools from major brands simply did not exist a few years ago. Raw PLA resin trades around $2.60-2.80/kg this month, so the spool you buy is mostly manufacturing, QC and brand, which is also why prices keep drifting down as capacity grows.
What you print with it is the cheap part either way. Run your spool price through the consumables math:
Your spool, your print: material + electricity
- Material (incl. 10% waste)
- $2.20
- Electricity
- $0.12
- Cost per print
- $2.32

Track what your spools actually cost
A market median prices the market; your shelf is its own dataset. If you sell prints, 3DPCC's filament inventory tracks each spool by brand and price paid, computes your per-gram cost in your currency, and feeds it straight into every quote, with low-stock alerts when a spool runs down. Change a price once and your quoting math follows.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
How much does PLA filament cost per gram?
2.0 cents per gram as of June 2026, based on a $19.99/kg median across 9 brands' official stores. Budget spools run 1.4 cents per gram and premium brands about 3 cents. After typical waste and failures, plan on 2.5 cents per gram.
How much does PETG cost per gram?
1.9 cents per gram as of June 2026 ($18.99/kg median), which now makes PETG as cheap as PLA or cheaper. Overture's 2-pack works out to 1.3 cents per gram, the lowest verified price in our June check.
How many grams of filament are in a roll?
Usually 1,000 g of filament net, with the spool adding 150-350 g of gross weight on top. Watch the exceptions: Prusament spools carry 970 g, Fiberlogy standard spools 850 g, and some PETG lines 750 g. Always divide price by net grams.
How much can you print with 1 kg of filament?
Roughly 60 Benchy-sized prints at typical settings (a Benchy weighs about 16 g), or one large helmet-class print. In money: a full kilogram of PLA is about $20, which is why material is rarely the biggest cost of a print.
Why is filament always on sale?
Because the list price is nominal: several brands run permanent discounts (SUNLU lists $18.99 and sells at $13.59 year-round, Creality lists $32.99 against a standing $19.99). Compare street prices across brands and ignore the strikethrough.
